Bloody Canyon Trail

From Hwy. 395 north of Mammoth, take the north entrance to the June Lake Loop road, turn right 1 ½ mile later on a dirt road at a sign for Parker & Walker Lakes. Go left at the junction, drive ½ mile and go right for Walker Lake and follow the signs for Walker Lake to find the trailhead.

Begin walking at the sign for Walker Lake, Sardine Lake and Mono Pass. Climb on a steep trail for a time before the trail descends on a steep, sandy path. At a trail junction at ½ mile go left for Sardine Lake.

Continue climbing on steep, rocky switchbacks, crossing the creek several times. The trail mellows a bit through a high walled canyon, then picks up steam before crossing the creek again. Watch for a beautiful waterfall ahead, the outlet stream for Sardine Lake. Reach the shoreline of Lower Sardine Lake soon after. This lake is surrounded by rocky cliffs on one side, with fine views back down to the Mono Lake Basin to the northeast.

Pass by a small unnamed lake on your way to Upper Sardine Lake. Watch for a trail junction for Mono Pass soon after leaving the lake. Reach the pass at 5 miles. Several old log mining cabins sit near the pass. Pass by Summit Lake on the other side of the pass, reach a trail junction at 5 ½ miles.

The left fork leads to Parker Pass, then descends through open ground before climbing up to a valley between Koip Peak (12,962) and Parker Peak (12,850). Steep switchbacks lead up a talus slope before descending to Alger Lakes. The right fork goes through a meadow to reach a junction at 6 ½ miles. Continue straight to reach Tioga road at 10 miles.
