Deer Lake Trail

From Hwy. 395, take the Mammoth Lakes exit, Hwy 203 and drive through town to the Lake Mary road, continue about 4 miles, turn left on Road 4S09 for Lake Mary & Lake George. Park near Lake George Campground.

Begin hiking at the trailhead sign for Crystal Lake, Mammoth Crest and Deer Lakes. Climb steadily on a sandy, shaded trail, passing by several summer cabins before reaching a trail junction for Crystal Lake at just under 1 mile. Trail to Crystal Lake descends to reach the lake shore a short time later.

Continue with the main trail towards Mammoth Crest, laboring up steep switchbacks to reach a breathtaking vista at 2 miles. Look down upon Lakes Mary and George to the east, Horseshoe Lake and Twin Lakes to the north. The Minarets and the Ritter Range are to the northwest.

Traverse a short, steep section of red volcanic stone, reaching the crest at 2 ½ miles. Follow the main trail along the crest on a relatively easy trail to reach the first of the three Deer Lakes at 5 miles.
