Fern/Yost

From Hwy. 395 north of Mammoth, turn on the south end of the June Lake Loop road, drive 5 miles, passing the lake and the ski resort. Watch for a sign off to the left for Yost Creek Trail. Drive a short distance on a dirt road to the trailhead parking. Although this is a short hike, it may not be suitable for younger hikers, as the trail is very steep and narrow in places.

Walk through a forest of Aspen and Fir, beginning to climb almost immediately. Labor up the steep hillside, stopping to rest and take in the view. Reach a junction at 1 mile next to the roaring waterfall of Fern Creek.

The right fork leads toward Fern Lake on an extremely steep trail, mellowing through a marshy meadow before more steep, short switchbacks lead to the lake shore at 1 ½ miles. This lake is a beauty, surrounded by rocky slopes and pines, and offers a sandy beach perfect for wading.

The left branch leads to Yost Lake on a longer, but less punishing trail. Reach another junction at 2 ½ miles. Take the right branch to reach Yost Lake a short distance later.
