Lamarck Lakes

From Hwy. 395 in Bishop, turn west on Line St. ( Hwy. 168 ) and continue approx. 17 miles to the North Lake turnoff. Trailhead parking is by the pack station. The actual trailhead is about ½ mile further in the North Lake campground. No parking is allowed in the campground for hikers.

The trail begins in the campground and heads south across 2 footbridges through a grove of Aspen Trees. Begin climbing steep switchbacks through a forest of Lodgepole Pines. Reach a junction with the Grass Lake trail at 1 ½ miles. Keep to the right for Lamarck Lakes as you continue with a steady asscent. The trail levels at 2 ½ miles before reaching the first of the Lamarck Lakes. This lake is an alpine beauty, nestled in a small granite basin.

Cross the outlet stream of Lower Lamarck Lake and continue up a set of switchbacks to reach Upper Lamarck Lake about ½ mile further. This country is rugged and rocky with sheer cliffs of granite and rough boulder slopes.
