North Fork Lone Pine Creek

From Hwy. 395 in Lone Pine, turn west on Whitney Portal road. Drive 13 miles to the trailhead.

This is a very strenuous route. There is no trail, and it is not suitable for inexperienced hikers or climbers. Hikers should be skilled at route finding through rugged terrain, scrambling over boulders and creeks and climbing on exposed rock ledges.

Begin hiking at the trailhead information sign. Climb steadily on a wide trail to reach the North Fork Lone Pine Creek at ½ mile. Leave the Mt. Whitney trail at the sign. Please follow route markers. Take the path up the south side of the creek for approximately ½ mile, to the point where the canyon narrows. Cross to the north side of the creek and ascend about 100 feet to a bench. If care is taken, this crossing is not difficult to locate.

Follow the bench a short distance down stream until it is possible to ascend and travel upstream via the " Ebersbacher Ledges ". Continue on the north side of the creek to the outlet of Lower Boy Scout Lake. Cross to the south side of the creek and proceed up an obvious talus slope. Where the creek forks, stay right to reach Upper Boy Scout Lake ( access to Mt. Carrillon and Mt. Russell ).

For routes on Mt. Whitney, cross to the south side of the creek just below Upper Boy Scout Lake. Again, cross through a talus slope, then turn west and hike about ½ mile. Turn north and ascend a steep rock slope ( often wet, icy and slick ) to Iceberg Lake. See a guidebook for more detailed information.

Human waste disposal is a big problem in this drainage, especially above 10,500 feet. If you take personal responsibility to pack out your own waste, the Mountaineer's Route, the East Face, Mt. Russell, and all the irreplaceable spots in this drainage will be the best possible wilderness experience for all.
