Piute Pass - North Lake Trail

From Hwy. 395 in Bishop turn west on Line St. ( Hwy 168 ) and continue approx. 17 miles to the North Lake turnoff. Parking is located near the pack station. No parking is allowed in the campground for hikers.

The trail begins as an easy ascent through a forest of Lodgepole Pine and Quaking Aspens before following the north fork of Bishop Creek. Cross the creek twice at 1 ½ miles. This trail usually has a spectacular show of wildflowers early in the season.

Push on up a series of rocky switchbacks to reach the first lake, Loch Leven at 2 ½ miles. This glaciated canyon is floored with smooth granite and small alpine meadows. Reach Piute Lake at 3 ½ miles after a gentle climb. More intense switchbacks will lead you to Piute Pass at 6 miles. The view from the pass is not as spectacular as some in the Sierras, but the view of the trail behind you is worth the hike. Over the pass, the trail drops into Humphreys Basin, loaded with many high alpine lakes.
