Saddlebag Lake Trail

The road to Saddlebag Lake leaves Tioga Pass road (Hwy 120) 2 miles east of the pass. This is a very popular trail that receives many visitors, weekends can be especially crowded.

There are trails on either side of the lake. The trail on the west side is shorter, but crosses talus slopes, and does not have the scenic views that the east side trail does. This trail begins near the Saddlebag Resort and is level easy hiking . Reach a junction at the north end of the lake at just under 2 miles. Continue on the left fork, passing beautiful Greenstone Lake, climbing an easy trail to reach Wasco Lake at 2 ½ miles. The trail descends for a short stint then climbs easily to reach the stark beauty of Steelhead Lake at 3 miles.

The trail around the east side of Saddlebag Lake leaves from the Saddlebag Lake Campground. This is an easy, level trail with views across the lake of the Sierra Crest. Reach a ranger's cabin in a picturesque setting at just over 2 miles, and the trail junction for Steelhead Lake soon after.
