Shadow Lake Trail From Hwy. 395 take the Mammoth Lakes exit, Hwy. 203. Drive through town to Minaret road. Turn right for Devil's Post Pile and Mammoth Mountain Ski Area. Continue down to Agnew Meadow Campground. There is a mandatory shuttle bus on this road from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. June - September. The bus leaves from Mammoth Mountain Inn. There is a fee. This trail is very popular with day hikers and backpackers as well as being a stock use trail. Avoid weekends to avoid the bulk of the crowds. The trailhead parking is beside the entry into the campground. Look for the trailhead sign for Shadow Lake, another sign is at the next parking area shortly after. Cross the creek to walk beside Agnew Meadow. Keep to the right at a trail junction just under a mile in. The trail descends for about ½ mile before an easy climb on a wide sandy trail brings you to the shore of marshy Olaine Lake at 2 miles. Reach a junction a short distance later, keep to the left for Shadow Lake. Cross a deluxe foot bridge soon after, and begin ascending steep, shadeless switchbacks. When you see the waterfall of Shadow Lakes' outlet stream, you know the trip was worth the effort. Continue on to reach Shadow Lake at 3 ½ miles. This lake is in a beautiful setting, with the Minarets, Banner Peak and Mt. Ritter dominating the scene on the east end of the lake. There is no camping at Shadow Lake. Continue on to Rosalie Lake after crossing a bridge at the end of the lake, taking the left fork, begin climbing on steep switchbacks to reach Rosalie Lake at 5 ½ miles. To continue on to Ediza Lake, stay with the John Muir Trail ( right fork ), climbing on a moderate trail to reach the lake just over 2 miles up the trail. The unsigned foot path to Iceberg Lake starts at the south end of Ediza Lake.
