Treasure Lakes Trail
Treasure Lakes Trail - South Lake
From Hwy. 395 in Bishop, turn west on Line st. (Hwy. 168 west) and continue approx. 23 miles to South Lake. Day use and overnight parking is located at the roads end.
The Treasure Lakes Trail is a good alternative to the Bishop Pass Trail if you are not a through hiker and would like to avoid the weekend crowds. It is a moderate trail, suitable for most hikers.
Begin hiking up the Bishop Pass Trail from South Lake and go right at the junction for Treasure Lakes at just under 1 mile, and begin a downhill slope before leveling off at about 1 ½ miles. Negotiate several creek crossings, keeping an eye out for wildflowers in this area. Begin climbing again on rocky switchbacks, crossing the creek again at just over 2 miles. This can be a tricky crossing in the spring, an option is to find a safer crossing further up, and cross-country up to the lakes.
You will reach the first of the Treasure Lakes at just under 3 miles. A faint use trail to the left will lead to the second of the Treasure Lakes. The lakes are located in a beautiful granite basin surrounded by high Sierra peaks. Rainbow, Brown and Golden Trout can be found in these lakes. Take a map if you would like to explore the trail to the upper Treasure Lakes.
