Wilderness Areas of the Sierra Nevada Plus Inyo and White Mountains

Monarch Wilderness

Previously Known as High Sierra Primitive Area. In 1984 more area was added and the name was changed to the Monarch Wilderness. The Monarch about44,900 acres. The wilderness is a rugged area with high steep ridges and deep canyons. There are mountain meadows, shallow lakes and spectacular multicolored geological formations contributing to the area's overall beauty. The area is extremely scenic. Elevations range from 2,300 feet to 11,077 feet at Hogback Peak. Vegetation includes chaparral and oak woodland at lower elevations, and pine, mixed conifers and giant sequoia stands at higher elevations. Difficult access to most of the area. There are no trails in Sierra National Forest portion.
